Vernon is a growing community. Since 2000 two exciting new facilities have opened in Vernon. The Multiplex is a multi-purpose arena and home to the Vernon Vipers - 2003 BCHL Champions. The Performing Arts Centre is one of the homes of the Okanagan Symphony and has opened the door for many performing artists to visit Vernon.
Another important feature of Vernon is its ties to the military. During both World Wars, Vernon was an important training ground for Canadian troops. The military camp, #110 Canadian Army Basic Training Centre, trained thousands of soldiers from 1940-45. After WWII, the camp was closed. In 1949 it was reopened and became an Army Cadet Training Centre for the Royal Canadian Army Cadets which it continues as to this day, Vernon Army Cadet Summer Training Centre. This centre hosts around 1400 youth from nearly all parts of Canada and the cadets in their uniforms are a common sight on city streets.
Vernons MultiPlex was renamed the Wesbild Centre in 2008.
On the educational front Vernon is served by School District 22 and some private schools. For post secondary ecucation the Kalamalka (Vernon) Campus of Okanagan College offers courses in business, health and social development, trades and pre-apprenticeship, and university transfer courses in Arts and Sciences. The "signature" porgrams at the Vernon Campus are Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (M License), ESL Immersion, and a Diploma in Writing & Publishing.
Greater Vernon includes the District Municipality of Coldstream and Electoral Areas 'B' and 'C' of the Regional District of North Okanagan.
