Keremeos & Area
The laid back community of Keremeos is located in the Similkameen Valley, about a half hour drive southwest of Penticton. Known as "The Fruit Stand Capital of Canada" its weather is ideal for growing a wide range of fruits and vegetables such as peaches, cherries and tomatoes. The largest economic sector of the Lower Similkameen Valley is farming and ranching.
OKhomeseller is pleased to display Keremeos real estate and homes for sale by owner.
The name Keremeos comes from the native word "Keremeyeus" which means "Windy Crossing Place". It is located where Highway 3A from the northwest and highway 3 from the south meet. Highway 3 continues west to Princeton and on to Vancouver.
The town got its beginnings in the early 1900's when the Victoria, Vancouver and Eastern Railroad built a line through the current town during the areas gold mining era. The railway found the flat land along the Similkameen River was an ideal place to build. The famous Red Bridge, just west of town, was built by the railway for river crossing. Although the rail line has been shut down for years the covered bridge still stands and is used for car traffic. It celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2008.
The Similkameen River provides excellent rafting, tubing and fishing. Other activities include hiking to The Keremeos Columns, visiting the Grist Mill east of town or spending a day at the Riparian Nature Park. Yearly activities include the Elks Rodeo on the May long weekend, the music festival Under the "K' (mountain) in late May and the Similkameen Sizzle pepper festival in September.
